The Mangal Sutra is THE most important piece of jewellery for a Hindu bride. In the wedding ceremony it is tied around the bride's neck by the groom and it is the equivalent to a wedding band or ring. The black beads of the Mangal Sutra are said to be auspicious and are thought to bring health and happiness to the family. Women are therefore expected to wear the Mangal Sutra all their life as it is a sign of marriage and commitment.
In recent times, it has become common practice for the bride to shop with the groom and his family to choose her own Mangal Sutra. This is because it has to be worn at all times regardless of the outfit or the occasion and accordingly the new bride must like it and feel comfortable wearing it.
Though they may choose to buy a Mangal Sutra with a traditional design, there are still a few changes new brides can make to ensure it they like it. For example, they may choose a simple pendant with an intricate design instead of a large heavy pendant that may not suit every day wear. Alternatively, the pendant may be traditional but the chain could be bereft of any ornamentation. If this is the case, the black beads will usually be incorporated into the design in some other way. This type of look is usually preferred by women who want their Mangal Sutra to be as discreet as possible.
Mangal Sutras don’t always have to be dicreet though. The Mangal Sutra could present the opportunity to make a bold and personalized fashion statement. With a designer Mangal Sutra and a diamond pendant, women can be appear to be glamourous at all times, without being over-the-top.
